Chapter 11
Step Aside
I n January 2012, nearly 25 years after the historic secret match, Max O’Malley is it work. He owns and operates a nursery, landscape design, and lawn maintenance business in the Texas Hill Coun try, where the winters are mild and there is little downtime in this type of business. Max and his wife built this business over 20 years ago.
To date, they have anywhere from 12-20 employees on staff. Max oversees all the operations, job-quotes, and employees. Denise oversees nursery products, sales, and financials. Together they make a great team, have a comfortable living, and a wonderful family.
Max’s son Rex started playing quite a bit of golf in college a few years ago and grew to love the game. Prior to college Rex played golf on occasion; he was more interested in other sports and music growing up, his dad never pushed him towards golf, if anything Max steered his son away from the game.
Rex had heard the stories from his mother and Grandfather John, of how his dad won many Jr. Golf and High School tournaments back in Cottonwood Oklahoma when he was young; and Rex heard about the secret match.
One day Rex told his dad about how much he enjoyed golfing in his spare time when not working. He then asked his dad for some swing advice and what he needed to do, to become a scratch golfer.
Max said he did not have much free time but perhaps they could go to a nearby driving range and that he would take a look a t Rex’s swing, or if needed he can always call grandpa for any advice.
To this point in their lives Max and Rex had played golf maybe 4 or 5 times altogether and none at all in the past 10 years. Max simply did not want anything to do with the game and no one new why.
The Driving Range
Max is dressed in his work clothes; denim jeans , t-shirt covered in dirt, and work boots. He meets Rex on a Saturday at a driving range in the Hill Country. Rex starts warming up and begins strike the ball solidly. Max tells his son, “ You are swinging the club just fine, there is no need for my instruction, I should head back to work.”
Rex says to his dad,” you always find a reason not to take the time to enjoy or play golf at all, why is that dad? I’ve seen the trophies, grandpa John has told me countless stories of how you were a natural, and how good you were. Why did you give up on it?
Max did not have a good answer; he wanted to avoid this conversation. The mere thought of talking about his previous golf career is a sore subject with Max, so he quickly changes the subject.
Max says, “you ever gonna marry that girlfriend of yours Rex, what’s your plan? Rex responds with, “I will answer your question if you answer mine.”
Max says,” step aside,” he then
